Andrea Owen's Live Like You Give a Damn and Assertiveness (E3)
Andrea Owen, a coach who writes for women tired of shrinking themselves, built Live Like You Give a Damn around twenty-five bold moves for people who keep waiting for permission to take up space. The urgency behind all of them is stated in one line on the book's page on her site: "This is your life. There are no refunds." The willingness to act on that, to speak up and show up for yourself rather than defer and disappear, is in the Big Five one facet.
Showing up for yourself is the Assertiveness facet
That facet is Assertiveness (E3), under Extraversion, the readiness to take charge, state what you want, and put yourself forward instead of hanging back. Owen's whole book is a training program for high E3 in people who default low: her bold moves are exercises in claiming space, setting a boundary, and saying the thing you have been swallowing. A high scorer steps up and speaks their mind without much friction. A lower scorer holds back to keep the peace, then feels the cost later, which is exactly the pattern the book is written to interrupt.
What keeps the book from being pure hype is that Owen ties boldness to honesty rather than volume. Showing up for yourself starts with getting honest about what you actually want and need, which is why her version of assertiveness is less about being loud than about stopping the quiet self-abandonment, close to the plain honesty of saying what is true. For a lower-E3 reader the usable move is one small bold act at a time, a single boundary named out loud, since assertiveness grows by repetition and not by waiting to feel ready. The life is finite and it does not come back. Owen's argument is that the people who act like they know that are the ones who stop shrinking.
Read your E3 to know what Live Like You Give a Damn asks of you. If it runs high, Owen gives a name and a reason to a boldness you already have, and pushes you to aim it at your own life rather than only outward. If it runs low, the book is the harder and more useful read, a set of concrete moves for stepping forward when your instinct is to defer. The refunds are not coming. Owen keeps insisting that is the best reason to stop waiting your turn.
